Story Milestone: 50,000 Words Total, 2:53pm ET

Guess what guys??? I’ve just now hit what should have been the word count total from NaNo 2014! Whew! Big moment. I’d like to thank the Academy for recognizing my genius, and Netflix for helping me put off this occasion for an entire year!

Welp, back to writing. I have about 1,000 words to go to hit 10,000 for NaNo 2015.

NaNo Update – War of the Words!

Day 4 of NaNoWriMo: I haven’t had contact with the outside world in over 72 hours…

Psych. But seriously, I have spent a hell of a lot of time on my laptop recently. (Also, when was the last time you heard someone use “psych”? It’s sooo 1999.) Continue reading “NaNo Update – War of the Words!”

Prepare for Battle: NaNo is Almost Here / Programming Alert!

Yes, NaNoWriMo is set to begin at 12am tonight. Will I be waiting at my desk at 11:59:59pm, fingers prone over my keyboard to begin furiously typing at the stroke of midnight? Nope. I’ll likely be at a Halloween party. Continue reading “Prepare for Battle: NaNo is Almost Here / Programming Alert!”

Pre-NaNo Update: Progress through Outlining

Well, it’s just about mid-October, and my novel is coming along. I’m not writing at a break-neck pace, but I have written almost half of my pre-NaNo goal. I’m at 36,000 words and change, with 13,000+ to go before November. Continue reading “Pre-NaNo Update: Progress through Outlining”

NaNoWriMo Returns, and so does my motivation

Holy crap, it’s almost October. This is the reason I avoid lofty New-Year’s-resolution-style goals at the beginning of the year. I am happy to say that I am on pace to meet some of the realistic goals I’ve set for myself. I should exceed my minimum for financial savings this year. My wedding is almost exactly one year away, and we have most of the major plans in place already (thanks mostly to my fiance, but whatever, I helped!). Continue reading “NaNoWriMo Returns, and so does my motivation”

The Doldrums of Summer Writing

They are upon this website like the haze that descends upon a blazing, stuffy afternoon. I’m not sure what it is about the middle of summer that makes any productive activity feel like a slog through knee-deep mud. Continue reading “The Doldrums of Summer Writing”

The Story of 1,000 Stories: Piecing Together the Narrative Puzzle

Recently, I’ve decided to dive into reading two lengthy, in-depth fictional series at once for my leisure reading: The Wheel of Time and The Horus Heresy. About 3.5 books into these series, I’ve managed to stay focused on the wider story arcs of each while alternating between them. And so far, I am astounded at how brilliantly these two series are written, and how differently from each other. Continue reading “The Story of 1,000 Stories: Piecing Together the Narrative Puzzle”

The Most Poignant, Succinct Summation of Storytelling

The art of storytelling fascinates me. Over the course of the last few years, through much reading and working writing into an everyday habit, I have developed my own theories and ideas about the nature of storytelling. Some of these I have tried to put into my own words, perhaps successfully, perhaps not. Continue reading “The Most Poignant, Succinct Summation of Storytelling”

Short Story Challenge – “First Day of Work” – Marcy Erb

I meant to post this about a week ago, since NaNoWriMo is already 8 days expired. But the results for my personal version of it with short stories – NaShoStoWriMo – were good: I wound up writing 15 short stories and over 22,000 words. My goal had been 20 stories, so I fell short of that, but considering I started the month with a whooping zero short stories ever written, I’m very pleased with the challenge. It accomplished its goal, which was to inspire me to write short stories.

Holiday travel for Thanksgiving really put a monkey wrench into my writing schedule and I marveled at folks in the U.S. doing NaNoWriMo who were able to power through that crazy last week of November when so many of us are traveling or shopping or prepping or hosting or cooking.

Shit, is November Nearly Over Already?

Welp, November ends on Sunday, as does NaNoWriMo 2014. I have 26,636 words written, and I know I will not be reaching 50,000 by the end of the month. Remember when I said I wanted to hit 35k last week? Same. Such is life. Continue reading “Shit, is November Nearly Over Already?”
