15 on the 15th: Texas – Davy Crockett’s Garden Spot of the World

With the recent devastation of Hurricane Harvey, Texas was on my mind. Sometimes, we all need a little help to look passed the darkness, and such light can only be found in music. So here comes a mix of some of my favorite Texas artists:

Selena – I Could Fall In Love

Gone since 1995, Selena Quintanilla was then, and remains now, a Mexican American hero. Born in Texas, there was no other way for this playlist to begin.

Nothing More – Who We Are

Their new album dropped today. I pre-ordered it. These gents came out of San Antonio, and I have to say they’re one of my new favorites.

Gary Clark Jr. – When My Train Pulls In

His blues rock sound is exactly what comes to mind when I think of quintessential Austin rock, his birth place.

Alpha Rev – New Morning

Another Austin based band, I first heard these guys when they opened for Third Eye Blind at University of Maryland in Baltimore, so this is a bit a throw back for me.

Miranda Lambert – The House That Built Me

Winner of two Grammys and eight consecutive ACM Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year, Lambert is an amazing source of Texas pride.

Flyleaf – Fully Alive

Now, I know Lacey Sturm left Flyleaf as of 2016, however, this is my favored configuration of this Texas band, and she’s actually from the Lone Star state, so I feel doubly justified. Also? This whole acoustic set is divine.

Pantera – Hollow

This Arlington, TX band hasn’t been active in nearly 15 years and yet their influence is still widely felt, especially in the metal community.

Bowling For Soup – Ohio (Come Back To Texas)

Shakey Graves – Late July

Born Alejandro Rose-Garcia in Austin.

Snow Tha Product -Waste Of Time

“…I’m a Texas livin’ Cali chick, That mean I own a .45 and I can carry it…” so says Snow tha Product herself.

Destiny’s Child – Survivor

Outta Houston.

Otep – Rise, Rebel, Resist

Otep’s lead singer is Otep Shamaya, another Austin born artist.

The Reverend Horton Heat – Bad Reputation

Why yes, this is a Dallas based psychobilly trio. So uniquely, bizarrely awesome.

Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart

Part of the 27 Club, this Fort Arthur artist left us way too soon.

Blue October – Home

Houston is home for this band.

Jessie Gutierrez

Honorable Mention:
Selena Gomez
Ciara
Kelly Clarkson
Element Eighty
