Oh, July, the perfect month for beach reading, you practically handed me your own theme. I just finished Philip K. Dick’s The Man In The High Castle, and without giving spoilers, I will say its plot revolves around alternative presents (of the 1960s). The what if scenarios that could possibly have occurred, if only that one important thing was different. I had seen this type of idea in other media, for instance in Fringe, where they have not only an alternative present but an alternative universe, but for some reason hadn’t read anything with this device. So I noticed something pretty early on when I was looking for just the right song to try to pen lyrics for: when an artist or band puts out a song without words, there’s a helluva lot going on. A few months ago, I retrospectively plotted the narrative of Of Monsters and Men’s first album, My Head is an Animal, in the hopes that binging on their music would sate my appetite for more until their second album was released.
Thankfully, their second album has arrived, and I now have tickets to see Of Monsters and Men live (again) in September.

I heard about a shooting the other night.
I was walking my dog after a long shift at work, torn between wishing she would just do her business so we could go home and enjoying the quiet that only seems possible after the sun has long ago set. A couple blocks down, two of my neighbors were likewise savoring the peace from the comfort of their front porch. Having a dog means getting to know everybody who lives within casual walking distance, so I waved hello. I’ll refrain from using names, and stick to genders – they’re a married couple, husband and wife. He’s a quiet fellow but she’s pretty talkative, so naturally she’s the one that mentioned the shooting to me.
