May’s Theme – Bullheaded and Two Faced AKA The Stars Are Looking Down On Your Personality

I didn’t know how to incorporate three random nouns into the title of this month’s theme so I figured I’d just commit to something silly and vaguely adjacent instead. Last month there was no theme at all so really, regardless of how much sense it makes, it is, by default, superior! Isn’t it funny how these things work out? Turning a Blind Eye – March’s Theme

Distracted, ashamed, shifted focus, tunneL,
Over and under and away from the holloW,
No eye contact. No sympathy - real, quasI,
Or other. Keep waking. Ignore thier needS.
Too bad they did this to themselves. How saD.

Glad I made the right choices? NO.
All I have to be glad for is better luck than theM.
If not for the grace of someone else's God, go I.
Nothing different but our separate fateS.

Too easy to pass on by - blind and numB.
Humanity is rarely humanE.
Each cry conveniently to someone noT
Walking passed. Someone not losT
Over and under and away in a sea of 'mE'
Rejoice in the comfort of selfish concern foR
Limited recipients: me, myself, and I is iT.
Determined narcissism and ignored deatH.

Avoiding virtue as deftly as a pleA
Never spoken, Never writteN,
Darkly arguing about worth and addictionS,
Like charity bestows its alumnI,
On the spot with a black gown and gaveL.
Sinister excuses and twisted improV,
Existing only to make okay an obvious vice.

Yesterday, a cold shoulder to a former soldieR.
Over and under and away gaze searching tO
Understand why seeing someone hurt and pooR
Results in mortification and disgust and hidinG.

Small acts of kindness seemed to gO
Out of fashion. Work, Buy, Hoard it alL,
Until...? Well, I imagine 'til world's enD.

March’s Theme – Marching Forward Toward What?

After the lovey dovey of last month, I figure it’s about time we get back to the harsh realities of life. This month’s theme was going to be “Simplify, Simplify, Simplify” a nod to Henry David Thoreau and then a brief comment on my own (book) hoarding tendencies and the pain inducing process of liberating some of them back into the wilds of Goodwill. Instead I’ve decided on: Continue reading “March’s Theme – Marching Forward Toward What?”

Love – Shakespearean Sonnet – JG

Come Hell Or High Water

This letter is a cognitive dissonance confession.
Which is better: Seeing the sun peeking out from thunder clouds?
Being happy to trust in such a quick fashion
That rain will eventually come after a drought? Continue reading “Love – Shakespearean Sonnet – JG”

Shakespearean Sonnet – (Secret) Love – SD

“Secret Love”

Obsidian hair tinged with red, like Blood Moon’s night,
Sways with every step of your bulldog swagger.
Sandstone-quarry eyes betray your pretty smile,
Refusing to let the faces see your fractures. Continue reading “Shakespearean Sonnet – (Secret) Love – SD”

Literary Inspiration – Free Verse- JG

Direction

No more time to waste; No more excuses to wait.
Overburdened by possessions, useless and extra,
Remove all these trappings of greed hidden beneath
The labels of ‘civilization’ and what society deems one needs,
Heed the call of the wild: lose your inclination for monotonous security. Continue reading “Literary Inspiration – Free Verse- JG”

January’s Theme – New Year, Same Everything Else

So much talk about resolutions. So many exclamations of how this is going to be the year, the year of big great things we couldn’t motivate ourselves to do last year but somehow, with the switching of a calendar, we shall accomplish now. Just ’cause the year’s changed, doesn’t mean I have. For both bad and good. Continue reading “January’s Theme – New Year, Same Everything Else”

Literary Inspiration – What are Rights?

I think about George Carlin a lot. He was one of the first comedians I really started listening to when I was about eight… which is probably too young. But I think his cultural impact goes far beyond being a stand-up comedian. I really think he was a modern-day philosopher, especially as he got older and the subject matter of his comedy became more existential. I don’t know if he believed all of the ideas that he presented on stage, but he at least had the intellectual capacity to consider and explain them – convincingly.
