Anachronism
Casually coasting on cynicism,
My story needed revision,
Tragedy had blinded and caused a division
Of hope and faith from daily existence,
‘Til I happened upon an anachronism. Continue reading “Moonlit Musing – Goofy Discoveries”

Desperation
Steady your breathing. In and out. In and out.
Hold onto the sound of the constant,
Focus only on this instant, on this inhale,
Freeze time inside, because it’s all you can do:
Steady your breathing. In and out. In and out. Continue reading “Moonlit Musing – Panic Attack Fodder”
Grey smoke trails spelling out disaster,
We circled around each other ever faster,
Ignoring warnings of whether
Or not, good could
Come of actions so callous.
I don’t know how we fell so far,
But I don’t think we’ll ever rise above it. Continue reading “Color Schemes: Less Than Friend”
Welcome to the Old Line State, where the music is almost as cool as the flag:
Good Charlotte – The Motivation Proclamation
I don’t care what anyone thinks about GC, they inspire all of the MD pride and nostalgia in me especially now that I no longer live there. Originally from Waldorf, they will always be first on my list. Continue reading “15 on the 15th: Maryland”
Our music reviews seek to trace the narratives that weave between songs and albums. Check out our Rhythmic Fiction tag for other stories told through music.
Forgive me Father for I have sinned. It has been six years since my last start to finish listen to a new Avenged Sevenfold album.
Confession time: I fell off the Avenged Sevenfold love boat years ago. I didn’t buy their last two albums; I bought a couple songs and figured ‘eh, I got the gist of it.’ After the passing of The Rev, well, things weren’t quite the same for a lot of us long-time fans. We were mourning and it’s hard to muster up anticipation in the face of tragedy. I couldn’t manage that same eager energy for them anymore. And yet, I still vividly remembered our early times together like freaking out the first time I saw ‘Unholy Confessions’ on MTV’s Headbangers Ball back in 2004. I was in high school. As tears leak down embarrassed cheeks,
sliding smoothly southward,
I think of all that rolls downhill with this decision –
down goes my faith, once again…
First god, and now man,
how does one find the energy to stand
in a world that stands against you? Continue reading “Election Day Revelations”
I miss music. I do. It’s so strange, music hasn’t gone anywhere, but I just haven’t been looking for it the way I used to. RedString started because of poetry, yes, but also because of music. Stevie and I traded mix tapes of songs we love and thought worthy of sharing and discussing and dwelling on. I miss dwelling on things outside my own head.
AND THUS BEGINS: Continue reading “After Silence….”
Night Without
Ignorance was the blanket I used to block out the sky.
Is it hard to fathom why the outside terrifies,
The deepest, realest part of me? You see:
Night can never come too soon. It’s just enough
Of the light, of the knowledge to slowly show me
The truth of society’s consuming darkness –
Mind tricks and head games: merely symptoms of our illness. Continue reading “Moonlit Musings – Confucius”
“I hate Halloween” I’ve told you on repeat.
I’m too old for trick or treat,
Not sold on trivial rituals,
And lack the spirit for fall festivals. Continue reading “Moonlit Musing – Halloween”
Violet voices composed of the purple haze
Lingering in the fragile space
Between virgin snow
And dawn’s first light. Continue reading “Color Schemes: Who I Miss”
