Misplaced Missives #139 – Playing Cards – JG

 139. Playing Cards

Your honesty is only there when it suits you;
The attention I bet; the effort you neglect;
Their only reward is guilt and regret.
I suspect I’ll never win your heart or your trust,
And that my prize will be the hush
Left from unanswered questions and awkward silences. Continue reading “Misplaced Missives #139 – Playing Cards – JG”

Free Verse – Kindness – JG

The Patron Saint

She sacrificed her pride
At the altar of your assistance.
This assertion met with resistance,
‘Cause you pray away your vices,
Those carefully cloaked as virtues.
What you refuse
To acknowledge is how you use
Other’s trust as donations
To your self-righteous cause. Continue reading “Free Verse – Kindness – JG”

Theme for August 26, 2014: Cruel to be Kind in the Right Measure

“We dig up diamonds by the score; A thousand rubies, sometimes more; But we don’t know what we dig ’em for; We dig dig dig a-dig dig…” Diligence in the digging of dwarfs. I think I saw Snow White for the first time when I was about seven and this catchy song was stuck in my head for days afterward. It took awhile to really appreciate how much work this virtue actually is, be it in the try, try again perseverance it necessitates or in the acceptance of its time consuming nature and perhaps fruitless outcome. But for now, on to the next one: Continue reading “Theme for August 26, 2014: Cruel to be Kind in the Right Measure”

Free Verse – Diligence – JG

Deeper

Digging for hidden treasure
At the bottom of a sandbox;
Going through the motions of hard labor,
Repetitive actions, brainless behaviors,
Every day – the colorless blur –
Change is the only cure
But different is frightening
While staying the course is comforting. Continue reading “Free Verse – Diligence – JG”

Theme for August 19: Work Hard, Play Hard

Some behaviors never get easier, regardless of how often you practice them or how often they’re called for. Patience has always been one of these things, for me at least. I grew up in a culture of instant gratification and I didn’t even have access to the internet until I was in my teenage years. Maybe patience is only a matter of counting down and we’re not the only ones practicing it; maybe it’s always painful even under the guise of anticipation. Either way and in every way, it is crucial and it is common, like all of The Seven Virtues. Next up is… Continue reading “Theme for August 19: Work Hard, Play Hard”

Theme For August 12th – Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

“…Never had to knock on wood, but I know someone who has, which makes me wonder if I could…” Leave it to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones to create the song running through my head due to last week’s theme. It might be a bit premature to say this, but I think the soundtrack to the Seven Virtues is going to be a lot more lighthearted than that of its counterpart. Continue reading “Theme For August 12th – Good Things Come To Those Who Wait”

Theme For August 5th! Humble Beginnings

…Steal my pride, Leave me blind, Steal my pride, And leave me blind, blind, blind now…” Boogie Woogie Woogie to sounds of the fall and please ignore the woeful screeching of my attempts at singing. Thank The Powers That Be that you can’t actually hear me, huh? This past week we stared into the abyss and saw what happened to a vivacious woman who lost herself in an ideal of ‘beauty’, how pride made us all liars, and how being a overconfident King lead to anguish and violence. Somehow I think as long as there’re people these things will continue to occur. In the immortal hamster wheel of Pinky and The Brain, “What do you want to do tonight?”

Free Verse – Pride – JG

What is Pride?

Pride is –
Spending too much money on a shiny dress,
Meant to impress, immediately,
Because revealing the inner workings of one’s mind,
Is unpopular and takes too much time. Continue reading “Free Verse – Pride – JG”
