Bad Girl’s World: Halestorm’s Unequivocally Hard Rock

Halestorm’s May 2, 2015 show at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore was cancelled due to the anticipated protests, and the state of emergency then still in effect in the city. I was supposed to go, but I was relieved when the show was postponed to September 26. The rioting and the presence of the National Guard was weighing too heavily on the city and my mind to see myself truly enjoying what would have been a positively energetic concert.

I have seen Halestorm live twice already, and I knew I wanted to see them again. Their on-stage energy and enthusiasm is genuine and infectious. Continue reading “Bad Girl’s World: Halestorm’s Unequivocally Hard Rock”

May’s Theme – Mayday! Abort! *insert screaming terror here*

This month is off to a terrible start already (notice this is a week late, I suck) and I just want it to be over with. If only life had a fast forward button to get through all the bad ish and jump right into the good. Or even just a warning system like Genie above or Spidey senses. Are superpowers and mythological allies really too much to ask for?? Continue reading “May’s Theme – Mayday! Abort! *insert screaming terror here*”

Quick Rip: Is This What Country Rock is Supposed to Sound Like?

My frame of reference for country music includes classic artists like Ray Charles (who took gospel and country, added a little soul to it, and essentially invented R&B) and Johnny Cash (duh.); modern singers/songwriters like Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, and Taylor Swift (before she officially moved to pop with RED); and whatever the hell this is supposed to be. I don’t listen to a lot of modern  or pop country music, and based on what I’ve heard, the genre doesn’t appeal to me all that much. Prose – Athlete, Temple, Bottle – JG

He started off early; nursed at the bottle soon after leaving his mother’s breast. It was his daily routine, his beverage of choice with every meal, (especially when that meal was sorrow), and the significant other in his longest relationship to date. He knew booze better than his own parents – Daddy left for work and never returned, and Mommy burned herself out and away, soul and body, trying to provide for him, her little son. Her shining sun, the only man she’d ever trust again and the only one who counts. She never counted all the glasses, all the cans, all the caps, all the bottles. “This City is Our Temple”

Ramps and bridges vault overhead between soaring plate-glass buildings, mirroring the heavens, reflections of our own sense of wonder. Their steel bones and cement feet shield us from the wild night, when the demons come calling; nightmarish designs of flesh or mere shadows. Color Schemes – Baltimore

Confusion in the face of Tragedy

So I get that this isn’t my normal modus operandi, but what the hell is going on? And I mean Hell: riots, violence, looting, and brick throwing. I live in the county not the city, but what the Hell, Baltimore? That’s not well written, but seriously: Since when does tearing a place down change anything for the better? Continue reading “Color Schemes – Baltimore”

Quick Rip: An Unidentifiable Muse

Muse fascinates me. They are the most intriguing, most enigmatic band of the 21st century. This band has made their name by playing a style of many names: electronic rock, progressive, fusion-something, glam rock, experimental rock, and my personal favorite… space rock. Continue reading “Quick Rip: An Unidentifiable Muse”

Color Schemes – Death

Strokes.

Splashes of color corrupt the clean canvas,
white – pure and blinding;
the light at the end of the tunnel we all deny we’ll someday reach.
Speech stopped and fear knocked, escorted by the man dressed in
black – it’s the total darkness that scares us.
What could ever prepare us for the unknown? Continue reading “Color Schemes – Death”

My Flag is Cooler than Yours, Part 2

Jessie and I argue. We usually run semantic circles around each other until we come to the realization that our views aren’t that different. So, we decided to put these debates into written and largely unedited form and publish them, because… #ideasandstuff. One of us begins with a question, and we go from there until a conclusion (or new question) is reached. We’ll see how this goes the first time around, and then we’ll probably come up with a witty/ironic/thematic name for it. This will be divided into 2 posts.

San Francisco Part I: Beers and Bubble Tea

Part I of my trip to San Francisco. That’s right… I have a dormant travel blog that is now being revitalized. – Steve D

Programming Note: Okay, I’m actually going to try to get back into this blog. Life has a way of getting in the way of other life, no? When I began this blog, I was just settling down from three country-hopping trips in the summer of 2012. I visited a lot of places and met a lot of people. I have since settled back in Maryland with my fiancee (the former girlfriend who ventured to Ireland and France with me) a dog, and a job. But I have more stories to tell and photographs to share. I am doing far less travelling now (to my dislike), but there are other trips I’d like to share. I may also write some retrospective posts about trips I have already discussed; what are the stories or feelings or impressions that have stuck with me one, five, or ten years after the fact? I’ll try…
